Brow Lift Overview

A brow lift, or forehead lift, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to correct droopy eyebrows that occur with age due to increased tissue laxity, loss of collagen/elastin, gravity, and bony remodeling of the orbit that occurs over time. Lifting the eyebrows can provide a more alert, balanced and youthful appearance to a person’s face. It is often performed in combination with upper blepharoplasty or facelift to give a more dramatic effect.

Dr. Seth takes an individualized approach to each patient, taking great care to rejuvenate the brow and forehead without creating a surprised or shocked appearance and to minimize scarring. He will meet with you to discuss your individual concerns, assess your facial structure, and make recommendations to help you achieve optimal results.

There are several approaches to brow lift surgery – coronal, trichophytic (hairline incision), endoscopic and mid forehead. Dr. Seth reviews all options and educates each patient about the indications, pros, and cons of each. When appropriate, Dr. Seth favors the endoscopic approach due to the smaller, more easily concealed incisions, shorter recovery time, reduced risk of scalp numbness, and minimal elevation of the hairline. For patients who desire to lower the hairline, the trichophytic approach allows for while providing a browlift. No matter which approach is selected, patients can be assured that the utmost care is taken to achieve natural, long-lasting results while minimizing scarring.

Candidates

You may be a candidate for brow lift surgery if you

  • are generally healthy
  • are a non-smoker
  • have sagging eyebrows, hooding your upper eyelids

Procedure

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and typically under general anesthesia.

For the endoscopic browlift, Dr. Seth makes a few (three to five) short incisions in the least conspicuous area to access the tissues of the forehead and brow. He then releases this tissue from its underlying attachment to the bone with specialized instruments, allowing for the elevation of the brow and forehead. The tissues are suspended in their new position so that they do not descend.. After the elevation is complete, the incisions are closed with sutures and a dressing is applied.

Often, a browlift is combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures. Dr. Seth will be able to counsel you regarding other potential procedures to create a harmonious facial outcome.

Recovery

Following their procedure, most patients can return home the same day. There will be a dressing in place which is to remain on overnight. Sutures are removed about one week after surgery.

You may experience swelling and bruising the first week after surgery; however, this should improve within two weeks. Application of ice may significantly reduce the swelling.

Aerobic exercise should be avoided for two weeks following surgery, but other normal activities may be resumed within several days of surgery.

Pain medication is prescribed for pain relief but most patients are able to wean themselves off in 2-3 days, taking Tylenol only as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, is a surgical procedure aimed at lifting and tightening the forehead skin and repositioning the eyebrows to create a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. It can help reduce the appearance of forehead wrinkles, frown lines, and drooping eyebrows.

Good candidates for a brow lift are individuals who have sagging or drooping eyebrows, deep forehead wrinkles, frown lines between the eyebrows, or a tired or angry appearance due to forehead aging.

There are different techniques for performing a brow lift, including the coronal or “open” brow lift, endoscopic brow lift, midforehead brow lift, and trichophytic brow lift. The choice of technique depends on factors such as the extent of correction needed and the patient’s anatomy.

The duration of a brow lift procedure can vary depending on the technique used and individual factors. On average, it takes approximately one to two hours to complete the surgery.

The recovery period for a brow lift varies among individuals. Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are common after the surgery, which gradually subside within a few weeks. Most patients can return to their regular activities within 10 to 14 days. Full recovery and the final results may take several months.

Like any surgical procedure, a brow lift carries certain risks. Potential risks and complications include infection, bleeding, adverse reactions to anesthesia, scarring, hairline changes, asymmetry, numbness or changes in sensation, and dissatisfaction with the aesthetic outcome.

A brow lift can significantly reduce the appearance of forehead wrinkles and frown lines by repositioning the underlying muscles and tightening the forehead skin. However, it will not completely eliminate all wrinkles. The extent of improvement depends on the individual’s anatomy, skin quality, and the specific technique used.

The results of a brow lift are long-lasting, but the aging process will continue. While the procedure can turn back the clock on forehead aging, natural aging and gravity may gradually affect the results over time. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, protecting the skin from sun damage, and following post-operative care instructions can help prolong the results. Additional procedures such as skin resurfacing and botulinum toxin injection to the forehead can help rejuvenate the forehead and help maintain the browlift result.

Yes, a brow lift can be combined with other facial procedures, such as eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), facelift, facial fat grafting, or rhinoplasty, to achieve more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Combining procedures can be discussed with your surgeon during the consultation, based on your specific needs and goals.
