Cosmetic Vein Treatments

Unsightly spider veins and varicose veins can significantly impact your confidence and quality of life. These visible vascular imperfections often appear on the legs, face, and other areas of the body, creating web-like patterns or raised, twisted vessels that many find cosmetically concerning.

Fortunately, modern cosmetic vein treatments offer safe, effective solutions for eliminating these problematic vessels and restoring smooth, clear skin. At Golden State Dermatology, our comprehensive approach to vein treatment combines advanced medical techniques with personalized care.

What Are Spider Veins and Varicose Veins?

Spider veins, medically known as telangiectasias, are small, thin blood vessels that appear close to the skin’s surface. These vessels typically measure less than 1mm in diameter and create red, blue, or purple web-like patterns. While spider veins are generally harmless from a medical standpoint, they can cause significant cosmetic concerns for those who develop them.

Varicose veins are larger, more prominent vessels that often appear raised above the skin surface. These veins may cause discomfort, aching, or heaviness in addition to their cosmetic impact.

The development of spider veins often involves underlying feeder veins or reticular veins that supply blood to the visible surface vessels. Effective treatment requires addressing these root causes to prevent recurrence and achieve lasting results.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy stands as the most effective and widely accepted treatment for spider veins and small varicose veins.

This minimally invasive procedure involves injecting a specialized medication directly into the problematic vein, causing it to collapse and eventually be absorbed by the body. The treatment has been refined over decades and represents the gold standard for cosmetic vein removal.

At Golden State Dermatology, Dr. Malvehy brings exceptional expertise to sclerotherapy treatments. With over 10,000 sclerotherapy procedures performed throughout his career, Dr. Malvehy has developed a reputation for delivering outstanding results even in challenging cases. His extensive experience includes publishing scientific literature on sclerotherapy techniques and teaching national courses to specialists seeking to master this procedure.

How to Prepare for Sclerotherapy Treatment

Prior to your sclerotherapy appointment, avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen, or other anti-inflammatory medications for one week, as these can increase bruising. Discontinue any blood-thinning supplements like fish oil or vitamin E. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the treatment area.

What Happens During Sclerotherapy?

During your sclerotherapy treatment, Dr. Malvehy uses only Asclera, the sole FDA-approved brand-name medication specifically designed for this procedure.

Golden State Dermatology uses ultrasound examination when spider vein patterns suggest underlying circulation problems. This diagnostic step identifies patients who need treatment for deeper vein dysfunction before addressing surface veins.

The treatment process begins with a thorough evaluation of your vein pattern. Dr. Malvehy carefully identifies any smaller veins that supply the visible spider veins. These underlying vessels are treated first, as addressing them provides more effective results by eliminating the source of the problem.

Sclerotherapy treatments can often be performed during your initial consultation visit, making the process convenient and efficient. Most sessions require 20-30 minutes to complete, depending on the extent of the area being treated and the complexity of the vein pattern.

What to Expect After Treatment

Dr. Malvehy has found compression stockings do not materially affect outcome after sclerotherapy for cosmetic spider veins and the vast majority of patients do not need to wear compression stockings or support hose. Because of the efficacy of Dr. Malvehy’s technique, patients don’t need to use compression stockings for 2 weeks as many other practices recommend.

We recommend no heavy exercise the afternoon or evening of your treatment to minimize skin flushing and sweating in the area that day. Walking, driving, and regular daily activities are fine. It’s okay to exercise before you come in for treatment.

Small bruises, about 1 mm In size, in the treated area are completely normal and typically lasts 1-2 weeks. Veins typically turn brown-ish and fade over the course of 2-3 months. This temporary discoloration is part of the natural healing process as your body absorbs the treated veins. The treated vessels themselves will gradually be absorbed over 8-12 weeks, with continued improvement in appearance throughout this period.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Most patients require only 1-2 sclerotherapy treatments to achieve their desired results. Using advanced techniques, Dr. Malvehy is able to treat large areas effectively in relatively few visits. Larger areas or more dense spider vein complexes may require multiple treatments to achieve complete coverage and optimal results. The number of treatments needed depends on several factors, including the extent of the vein problem, the size of the treatment area, and individual healing characteristics. Dr. Malvehy will discuss realistic expectations and develop a personalized treatment plan during your consultation. Over time, new spider veins may develop in various areas. Most patients repeat treatment every 3 to 5 years.

EndoVenous Laser Ablation

Sclerotherapy for spider veins is considered a cosmetic treatment and is not covered by Medicare or health insurance plans.
